GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY – Male Breast Reduction Surgery overview:
Male breast reduction surgery is used to remove excess fat and tissue in order to reduce in size overdeveloped male breasts. Depending on the cause of breast development, the doctor will use either liposuction or direct excision (cutting away) or a combination of both techniques. This procedure is, safe, effective and performed thousands of times every year. The procedure can take from 1-2 hours per breast and involves the following:
- You will be anesthetized, cleaned and draped
- Incision is made in the armpit if liposuction is performed alone
- Excess fatty tissue is removed through this incision – using a cannula
- Incisions are made around the Aerola if direct excision is performed
- Excess glandular tissue, fat and skin is removed with scalpel and/or cannula
- Skin around the Aerola is brought down and together to reshape the breast
- Sutures are closed – giving the breast its new contour
- The Cannula is a gentle vacuum like instrument used in liposuction
What to expect after gynecomastia surgery:
- Your breast(s) will be wrapped in a compression bandage over gauze dressings
- A small drainage tube may be placed in each breast to drain blood and fluids
- Oral pain medications are given to manage any discomfort
- Bandages are removed 1-2 days following surgery
- Compression bandages are worn until swelling and bruising subsides
- Stitches are removed within 1-3 weeks (in most cases)
- Swelling and bruising gradually subsides over 2-3 week period
What about getting back to normal after Gynecomastia Surgery? You will probably be up and about 1-2 days after your surgery – but you will need to take it easy. You will experience discomfort such as aching in the breasts for a few weeks. You may be able to return to work and social activities within 2 weeks – but you will need to avoid strenuous activities such as lifting or pushing anything heavy for 3-4 weeks. Limit your physical activity to stretching, bending, walking and swimming until your energy level returns to normal – usually 2-4 weeks.
