QUESTIONS OUR PATIENTS ASK ABOUT LASER SKIN RESURFACING:
Is Laser skin resurfacing/laser surgery right for me? If you have any of the concerns mentioned above and you meet the requirements for laser surgery skin resurfacing, then it could be the right choice for you. Requirements for laser surgery:
- You should have concerns that can be corrected by laser surgery.
- You should be in good general health.
- You should not be experiencing any serious health problems.
- You must have realistic expectations and goals.
What takes place during the consultation? This time spent with your surgeon is most important! Your physical and emotional health will be assessed – your concerns evaluated and your treatment plan customized. Please bring the following with you to your consultation:
- Medical records – especially concerning past surgical procedures.
- Past and present medical conditions information.
- List of all medications you are taking – including vitamins and herbals.
- List of your present concerns and any history related to those.
What to expect during the physical exam portion of your consultation:
- Your face and neck areas will be thoroughly examined.
- Your skin type – skin condition will be evaluated.
- Your concerns will be evaluated and your treatment plan determined.
PREPARATION FOR LASER RESURFACING SURGERY:
- You should be in good health at the time of your procedure.
- If you are a smoker – we strongly encourage you to refrain from smoking for at least 1 week prior to and also after your surgery until you are completely healed.
- Take/use the medications and applications that will be prescribed by your surgeon – adherence to his instructions is imperative.
- You will need someone to drive you the day of your procedure and plan to stay with you for several hours that day after returning home.
*Note – it has been proven that smokers are at greater risk for bleeding, infections and longer healing/recovery time. It is important that you adhere to your surgeons instructions.
LASER RESURFACING SURGERY OVERVIEW:
- You will be draped, anesthetized and the face and neck prepped.
- Using the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser – your surgeon works on the areas of concern – the laser “evaporates” the water in the skin.
- The evaporation causes the skin to “vaporize” – so scars, lines, wrinkles, blemishes, uneven coloring etc. are diminished or removed.
- The laser uses high beam energy light and works precisely layer by layer.
- The procedure takes from ½ - 1 or more hours.
- Laser skin resurfacing surgery is an “outpatient” procedure.
- The discomfort following surgery is controlled with oral pain medications, ice packs and topicals prescribed by your surgeon.
What to expect after laser skin resurfacing surgery:
- Your discomfort will be moderate to severe for 2-3 days - for more extensive procedures – pain medication will control this along with cold packs.
- You will experience bruising, swelling and “skin crusting” along with redness – this is all normal and does diminish daily.
- Healing is a gradual process – you will see the redness and crusting diminish each day – and gradually new “pink” skin appears.
What about getting back to normal after laser skin resurfacing surgery? As with any invasive procedure – healing takes time but does happen. Your surgeon will give you complete instructions on caring for your face daily. This will involve a special cleansing process along with use of prescribed skin care products to help you heal and ensure the best results. The redness can take weeks to fade away – but the final results are well worth the intervening care and patience. You will need to avoid the sun and use a good sun block.
